Season Review

"I'll be there"

Cardiff City released a new initiative for the 2010–11 season, as their "I'll be there" campaign. The nickname comes from one of the earliest songs sung by City fans, since the early 1920s. Cardiff's new board has renamed the Level Four area of Cardiff City Stadium the "Centenary Suite". The season tickets and tickets will be printed with the popular white and yellow strips of the 70s.

Kits

Puma carry on into a second year of manufacturing City's kits, while SBOBET continue into their last year of their contract as shirt sponsors. Cardiff adopt one of the Puma's new templates with wing shapes joining the torso and sleeves, whilst also continuing with the blue shirt and white short and socks. For their away kit, Cardiff adopted a black and yellow shirt. They also kept their 2009-10 yellow and blue away shirt and change it to their third kit.

Events

Pre-season

Cardiff began their pre-season schedule with a match against Conference National side Bath City on 8 July, winning 2–0. Jay Bothroyd opened the scoring within the first three minutes, before trialist Bryan Hughes set up Chris Burke, who scored at the start of the second half. New loan signing Daniel Drinkwater made his Bluebirds debut, whilst Tom Heaton came on in the second half to make his second Cardiff debut.[17] Cardiff travelled to Portugal for a week starting from 11 July. The team trained in Algrave for the week before taking on Portimonense, handing a trial to Kevin Lejeune. The Portuguese side stuck first, scoring after just five minutes, and after 30 minutes Portimonense were 2–0 up and Cardiff only had one shot on target. The game eventually finished 3–0.[18] Cardiff played Football League Two champions Notts County. County's top scorer the previous season, Lee Hughes, put them 2-0 up by half time but Ross McCormack pulled one back for Cardiff in the 60th minute.[19] The final match of Cardiff's pre-season saw Spanish side Deportivo de La Coruña travel to Cardiff City Stadium, winning 1–0 with a goal from Dioni. During the game, the club handed trials to Toni Kallio, Gregory Vignal and Martin John, although John played no part in the match.[20]

Football League Championship

Cardiff began their season with a hard test against Sheffield United. Ched Evans opened the score for United, but Jay Bothroyd equalised for the Bluebirds in the second half.[21] Cardiff then travelled to Pride Park to play Derby County, winning 2–1. Michael Chopra scored the first before Tomasz Cywka equalised, a goal from Chris Burke later sealed the win. Cardiff jumped to 2nd by beating Doncaster Rovers 4-0, shock signing Craig Bellamy scoring a goal on his début with a 25 yard free kick, and Portsmouth 2–0. Cardiff next faced Hull City, who they beat 2-0, but they suffered their first league defeat of the season three days later in a 2–1 loss to Leicester City. Cardiff then dropped to 3rd with a defeat to Ipswich Town. Cardiff bounced back with a 2-1 win over Millwall followed by a 0–0 draw with Crystal Palace. Cardiff then defeated Barnsley 2-1 at Oakwell. Cardiff then defeated Bristol City 3-2 at Severnside Derby from 2-0 deficit at first 8 minutes. They developed 3 winning series after defeating 2-1 Coventry City followed with a 4-0 demolishing over Leeds United, putting Cardiff level with 1st placed QPR. Cardiff took 1st place with a 3-1 win over Norwich City followed by a loss to Swansea City in the South Wales derby. A 1-1 draw with Reading followed, with an conversational equalizing goal from Jay Bothroyd, Cardiff then went 1st after 4-2 win over Scunthorpe United before losing to Nottingham Forest. Cardiff ended November with a 2-1 defeat to Queens Park Rangers, Craig Bellamy scored the opener but Ranger's Kaspars Gorkšs and Adel Taarabt scored in each half to give Rangers a 5 point lead at the top of the table. Cardiff then drew to Preston North End and then a loss to Middlesbrough. Their postponed game with Burnley on 18 December, meant that Cardiff dropped to third.[22] A 2-0 win over Coventry City sent the Bluebirds back to 2nd, this was followed by a 4-1 loss to Watford and then 3-0 loss to Bristol City. Leeds United lost to Cardiff, 2-1 and this was followed by a 1-1 draw with Norwich City, Jon Parkin got his debut goal to give Cardiff the lead before Russell Martin equalized. A 4-2 win over Watford followed. A 2-2 draw with Reading saw Cardiff drop to 5th, but a 1-0 win in the South Wales derby put them 3rd. A 1-0 win over strugglers Scunthorpe put Cardiff back to 2nd before drawing to Burnley. Cardiff suffered their first defeat since the first game of 2011, against Nottingham Forest, 2-1. But they quickly bounced back with on-form, Leicester City. Cardiff then beat Hull City away from home. Two losses followed against Ipswich Town and relegation battlers, Crystal Palace. Consecutive dras followed against Barnsley and Millwall. After the international break, Cardiff started with a 4-1 win over Derby County and a 3-1 win over Doncaster Rovers. Cardiff finally regained 2nd place with a 2-0 win over struggler's, Sheffield United, this was followed with a 3-0 win over Portsmouth. They then dropped to 3rd but confirmed a play-off place with a 2-2 draw with league leaders Queens Park Rangers, this followed with a 1-0 win over Preston North End, which saw them relegated to League One. Their Automatic Promotion challenge was severely damaged by a 3-0 defeat against Middlesbrough. A 1-1 draw with Burnley at away match in 7 May, Cardiff dropped to 4th place and faced Reading at Promotion Play-Offs.
